3 Signs It's Time To Call A Plumber Right Away

Time to call plumber

A lot of homeowners that are handy with a hammer or wrench like to take a DIY approach when it comes to small home repairs. It can give them a sense of accomplishment while simultaneously saving a few dollars. But there are some situations, especially where plumbing is involved, you need to get the help of an expert and do so fast. Here are three of those situations.

Unusually Low Water Pressure

The water pressure in your home should remain relatively the same throughout the day, all year round. If you're connected to a public water system, you may get the occasional fluctuation, but those should be minor, rare, and short-lived. If, however, you notice a sustained and substantial drop in water pressure, like water barely dribbling out of your shower head or a toilet that takes longer than usual to flush, you might have a serious problem. Get on the phone and call a plumber right away.

Hearing Water When You're Not Running Any

The pipes in your house are there so that water can safely move around your home to where you need it. When you turn on a sink or flush a toilet, if you listen carefully you'll hear water running through your pipes. But when you hear water running through your pipes when you haven't opened a tap or turned your dishwasher on, there could be a problem. The primary cause of this problem is a rather serious one: a water leak. You'll want to get on the phone and contact a professional plumber right away for a water leak repair, as even a small leak can cause major damage if left untreated.

Seeing Water Where it Shouldn't Be

Maybe the biggest red flag of all as far as the plumbing in your home is concerned is when you can see water somewhere you should not. If you can suddenly see water pooling in a corner or a room, seeping through some drywall, or worst of all, dripping from your ceiling, you need to get a plumber on the line as quickly as possible. This type of visible water is almost always the sign of a leak or a burst pipe. Depending on the scope of the leak, the damage can be extremely serious. For example, a considerable leak in an upstairs bathroom can cause the ceiling to collapse. Don't waste time trying to find the source of the problem on your own. Contact a plumber first and then you can try and isolate the cause while they are on their way.

In Summary

Doing small plumbing repairs on your own is a great way to learn more about home improvement as well as save some of your hard-earned money. But sometimes the right move is to call a professional immediately. That is certainly the case with the three plumbing situations mentioned above. Water problems can wreak havoc on a home and do thousands of dollars of damage in very little time, so call a professional the next time you think you have a serious water problem in your home.
